Yes, our finish is food safe. We only use food-safe all natural oils and waxes that are FDA approved.

Wood grain is best understood by thinking of it as a tightly packed group of straws - each straw representing one wood fiber. With normal cutting boards, the straws (wood fibers) run horizontal, or parallel to the cutting surface.
With end-grain boards, the bundle of straws is cut to length (usually 2 inches) and flipped vertically onto its end. As a result, the wood fibers of end-grain boards run vertical, or perpendicular to the cutting surface.When cutting on normal boards, the blade cuts across the surface of the wood fibers, resulting in damage to both the blade and the board.
With end-grain boards, the blade slides between the wood fibers, pushing them out of the way. After the blade is removed, the fibers bounce back to their original position, resulting in much less damage to blade and board. This is why the best chefs in the world use end-grain cutting boards to prolong the life of their exceedingly expensive cutlery.
